A Brief History

Pozsonyi kifli, known as Bratislavský Rožok in Slovak and Pressburger Kipfel in German (with Pozsony and Pressburg being historical names for Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia), has a fascinating origin story.

After the Ottoman defeat at the Siege of Vienna, an innovative baker created these crescent-shaped cookies inspired by the half-moon flag of their opponents. The recipe eventually made its way to Bratislava, where it developed its own identity.

These sweet pastries can be considered the little cousins of and , which are long pastry rolls filled with poppy seeds and walnuts. Regardless of their origin story, Pozsonyi Kifli boast a higher filling-to-pastry ratio than the beloved beigli, making them an excellent treat.
